Midwest foodie: The best cheese plate in the city. You pick out cheeses from the fridge and Bacchanal puts them on a legit cheese board with bread, olives, jam, and nuts. Classy with lots of flavor. If you’re looking for something a little heartier than cheese and bread they also serve food in the back that is really underrated. Bacon wrapped dates are to die for and they have some interesting seafood dishes that take advantage of the gulf coast such as poached shrimp. Most people think of the drinks at Bacchanal, but I wouldn’t sell them short on food. One thumb up.
West Coast boozer: Wine up the wazzoo at this place. Like woah. Great options for both red and white plus you get to drink the whole bottle heyoooo (they do have wines by the glass but just nah). I hear they have great cocktails, but I get so overwhelmed by wine when I walk in that I haven’t ventured past that. Only down side it is a bit pricey for a med student’s budget, but their selection is top notch. A-
East Coast Vibes: This is by far my favorite place in New Orleans. Go with friends, dates, parents, someone else’s parents, alone…. It’s heaven on earth, really and truly. Far out in the bywater on its own deserted corner is this wine and cheese mecca with stringing lights and live music out in the garden. There’s a bar where you can order off a menu for food or cocktails (see above) but thereal deal is choosing your wine and building your own cheese board. You enter Bacchanal through an above ground wine cellar where you pick your meat, cheese and wine(s), pay up at the counter and get a number. Bachannal folk will then bring the cheese plate to your table either in the garden or to the upstairs balcony. But no matter where you sit you’ll be flying high. A midsummer night’s dream no matter when you go. 20/10
